While there are a few tope about it is important to remember that any kind of fish or squid bait could picked up by a tope. so it is best to either tackle up for tope  or fish with crab or worm baits for hounds.  For tope traces I would recommend 8/0 or 10/0 circle hooks, 18 inches of 100lb wire or 200lb mono then a 6ft 80lb+ rubbing trace. I would suggest a 50lb+ leader on to the main line too in case the fish roles up the main line. Its also worth bearing in mind that when tope fishing we are often in deeper water and fishing with bigger baits so it often requires a slightly larger lead then you may normally get away with.  We tend to use 8oz breakaway or even fixed grip leads to overcome this.
