The Christmas period was busy for me even if I wasn’t on the boat then I was fresh water fishing somewhere. We managed a few trips out between Christmas and new year though. There were loads of whiting and you will be pleased to hear the dogfish are back on the feed too. We had a few dabs and on dads boat they even managed both a 3 bearded and 5 bearded rockling. The main target species inshore has been the roker. These aren’t in huge numbers but if we land on them there are still a few to be caught. Top rod on the last trip was 5 roker, with the other lads finding one or two as well. Remember we can often still get out and catch plenty of fish when others cant so if your cancelled else where then see if we have any last minute room.
Over the christmas break the charity competition took place and raised £950 for the RNLI and air ambulance. This year we used a simple points system to decide the biggest bag and the biggest fish was measured in length (or width on rays). This seemed to work well and stopped the needless waste of fish that can be associated with murder matches. The biggest fish went to Paul stoker on nick Reynolds boat and the biggest bag went to Stephen Clarke on the ‘Galloper’. The child’s biggest bag went to Maya Martin on the ‘Razorbill’. Gary Petley gets a special award for catching the biggest fish in a bottle. As he reeled in from the last cast of the day he had a a bit more weight on his line. We thought I was going to be a roker but it turned out to be a ‘lord Rayleigh’s milk’ bottle. When we put the bottle on deck it had a little head poking out of it from what we think is a shanney! That was a surprising way to end the day. As we move into a new year and a new decade we will still be offering trips throughout January. One bonus of a mild winter is at there are still plenty of roker to be caught and at least you wont be as cold. Please get in touch if you want to get out with us in January, February or even later in the year. My diary is open and dates are filling up.
