shetland 2019

We headed out for day two and there was a little more breeze today. Kenny was keen to put us on the cod again to start with. We made our way out and set up the same as yesterday. The first mark was thick with little coalfish. Most of which couldn’t fit our lures in their mouths. One or two did get hooked and god knows how as they were much the same size as the lure! We moved over to where we had the cod yesterday. We had a drift through here with just the odd bite or fish bumped off. Uncle steve managed to sneak out a nice cod but they weren’t feeding yet. possibly as we were much earlier in the tide than yesterday. To be honest after the workout yesterday we had asked if there was anything a little more sedate we could try today. Kenny  surprised us with how many species are on offer here and just about everything seems to be a specimen size too! we didn’t really have the right bait with us (fresh worm would have helped) but we did have a few frozen mackerel and squid that had been in the cool box since Sunday night. However we were keen to try for flatties so off we trundled and re-tackled with flattie rigs. We had a drift or 2 and at first it seemed the little coalies were following us as one came up. Uncle steve was on form today and he didn’t let us down when he caught possibly the best fish of the trip. It was indeed a lesser spotted dogfish. There had been much mention of dogfish throughout the trip. Kenny said that they are there although they are beaten to the baits by cod and coalfish. It took a while longer before the first dab came to the boat. It was a cracker and one of the biggest I have seen! One or two more came to the boat before Stacey hooked into a better fish. it rattled around well before she coaxed it to the surface. It was a cracking plaice and clearly her PB. Kenny had said they went to around 6lbs or so and put this one at a good 2lbs. however when we put it on the scales it went over 4.8lbs! in that case I want to see his 6lbers! We had a few more dabs and steve canham had a 2lb plaice before Kenny offered us the next option which was to try for Pollock on light gear. When he mentioned they have had them to mid 20’s here we were keen to try. We had a good few drifts on several different marks with just the odd pluck at the lures. We had one more move back closer towards home and tried for flatties again. we didn’t manage any more flatties but a couple of small ling came aboard before we headed for home. Staceys place was clearly fish of the day and it was a shame we didn’t have more bait. I would love to come up again and bring more bait. There is far more to Shetland than meets the eye, I would love to do a longer trip hunting species. Kenny seems keen to do so and has a few parties that do just this with some great results. There are all sorts of rays and common skate available along with smaller species such as dragonet to dogfish and he’s even had ballen wrasse to 8lbs!
