shetland 2019

This week we headed off on our spring holiday. Im sure I have bored many of you with the details over the last couple of months but those who didn’t know we were off to Shetland.  Our trip started on the Sunday night. We came in from the boats, had a quick wash and change then headed up to our digs for the night near Gretna green with uncle steve in tow. This got us a good way up and gave us a good head start the next morning. We got up the next morning and had a fairly leisurely ride up to Aberdeen. The weather was nice up hear with bright sunshine and a light (but chilly) breeze.  We had been told by a friend of a friend that there was good fishing for flatties here and it was close to the ferry terminal. We had a look around and headed to the beach for a few hours. The tide was fairly high and had been ebbing for a short while. Im sure there will be no surprise who had the first fish! of course it was Stacey, with a lovely little flounder.im also sure it will be no surprise who had the first snap off. Yes it was uncle steve on his first cast! This tickled me. We fished on here and were joined soon after our first fish by stephen Charles. Stephen had made his way across from the west coast of Scotland where he had been fishing for common skate over the weekend. We had a move around as the tide got down and had several more flounders. Stephen may have joined us later on but he managed to catch 2 flounders while uncle steve was still blanking. We gave uncle steve some help and soon enough he had a flounder on the beach. Not only that but it was the biggest too. we had 8 flounders between us and had a lovely afternoon. There was plenty of wildlife around too and Stacey headed off to take some pictures. There were lots of sand martins in the sandy cliffs, several Ida ducks and a little guillemot working just beyond the surf. We made our way to the ferry terminal where we met martin who had also made his way from the west coast where he had been fishing for skate with Stephen.
