The wind may have curtailed some of our offshore plans of late, however we have been able to find some great fishing inshore. The thorn-backs have moved back inshore in numbers already thankfully. Those that don’t get swept up by the commercial boats should keep us occupied for the next few months inshore fishing. these have been accompanied by lots of hungry dogfish to keep the rod tips rattling as well as consuming most of my squid supplies!

There are still a few summer species about if we can get to the right places. Most trips still include a few bass, hounds and baby tope. We also catch a few of the eels and stingray as they move out of the estuaries at the end of summer. This year is no different and as well as a few eels (a less familiar sight nowadays) we have also seen the odd stingray. On one trip when the wind put a stop to our offshore plans we were pleased to see a nice sting ray come out early on. I’m not sure what pleased ollie more, catching a sting ray or the fact his Dad Chris didn’t catch one! As well as stingray we had thorn-back ray, dogfish, whiting, baby tope, smooth-hound and bass that day.

We will try to prolong summer by following these species as they move offshore over the coming weeks. The bass should hang around longest as they shoal up before eventually migrating south for the winter.

With winter species in mind there are signs of hope for the coming months. I have heard of a few codling showing inshore and this was confirmed when Dad had not just one but two codling the other day! I doubt there will be any huge numbers any time soon but it would be nice to see a few again this winter. After last year it will just be nice if we are allowed to take you out all winter. Fingers crossed for that.

As the hounds and bass move off in September their place will be taken by the thorn-back rays as the move back inshore.  If I cant get you out soon then please remember the bass will hang around offshore into November so please ask to get the best tides.
