Its that time of year when the sheltered waters of the blackwater estuary and the surrounding areas really come into their own. There has been a fair bit of wind about over the last week or so and it looks set to hamper us for a good few days yet. Luckily the blackwater estuary and surrounding areas are loaded with fish. it has to be said that many of them are dogfish and whiting. although the fish finder is often loaded with herring mid-water too we only tend to catch these if we happen to put a net over for them. The dogfish and whiting are on our baits as soon as they hit the bottom but thankfully if we can get through them there are a few roker and the odd codling and bass mixed in.  for those who aren’t aware many children have been off of school last week and this week.  With this in mind it is encouraging to see is how popular family trips continue to be at the moment. We have been joined by several family groups on either half day or full day trips. Marks family booked the boat the other day and saw non-stop action all day. they caught whiting, dogfish, bass and roker for their efforts although unsurprisingly the former made up most of their catch. The sun shone on us for most of the day and it was quite mild. Despite a stiff breeze it was very pleasant in the estuary no doubt aided by our catamaran which provided a nice spacious and stable platform. The boys did very well throughout the day (although their dads took over for a bit) and I literally had to drag them away from the fish at 16.30 or we never would have come home! I look forwards to seeing them again. I have a feeling this kind of trip could be popular over the Christmas period if people have little else to do and hopefully it will be good for the future of our sport. When the weather permits we are still heading offshore for bass at the moment, lets hope we get a couple more trips in before they leave us.
