Another busy week aboard the Galloper and they are about to get even busier too! There are numbers of smooth-hounds in most places now. Even the estuaries are showing a few hounds. although they are mostly smaller fish in there they are a welcome sight on a windy day and there can be bigger fish mixed in too. Slightly further afield and we are catching some better sized hounds. There are good numbers about and a few around double figures are showing. These are great fighting fish and look cracking too so are always popular for some sport in the sun.
There continue to be some nice rays around, these make the days catches up and not only provide some rod bending action but the occasional male are popular for the table. Pictured are a few nicely marked fish from recent trips.
The numbers of bass have increased too, we have seen several spent fish so it looks like they have finished spawning and are hungry for our baits. The lads have had a few table sized fish and more schoolies are showing to make up their numbers.
The tobacco juice, may weed, may rot or what ever you wish to call the algal bloom has now started, this will mean the water will turn clearer soon and we should catch some bass on lures when conditions are right. That is something to look forward to in a few weeks time. Our offshore bass trips can produce some big numbers of fish and particularly good sport on lures. Keep an eye out for spaces on those trips.
For the next few weeks our offshore efforts will be concentrating on tope fishing. this is hit and miss, expensive and involves long hours. The rewards can be fantastic though with screaming reels and big fish your reward. Many of my tope trips are fully booked for June but I do have a couple of days with spaces next week weather permitting. Either Monday 23rd or Wednesday 25th.
