Headed offshore for the second time this year with ian and the lads today. there were 6 lads who had made their way from Norfolk and Cambridgeshire for a 6am start. There was a bit of breeze to start with but I was forecast to die away throughout the day. We had a good steam to start with before we arrived at our first mark. We fished here for the first part of the tide and found a few dogfish, along with a roker for dean. With little else for our efforts and the wind starting to ease a little we put a move in and pushed a bit further off to our next mark. The tide was running nicely here and the first bites came soon after the anchor had settled. Andy was the first into a fish and it had us a little confused with an odd fight. As it approached the surface it became apparent that the fish was hooked just behind the head which explained why this spurdog was kiting around like a roker. Andy was pleased as it was his first spur and I am always relieved when the first one is on the boat each day. The rest of the tide was nice steady fishing to keep us busy. There were bites all of the time and sometimes two or three decent fish on at once. For one reason or another we lost a lot of fish throughout the day. Often these fish were on for a good length of time before slipping the hook. We tried leaving them longer, taking them sooner, ‘J’ hooks and circle hooks but each lost fish as the day went on. The spurs that did reach the boat were nice fish and several had lacerations to them. I think these could be from mating, if so then it may have been the fish weren’t taking the baits very well as they were pre-occupied with mating? Its just a theory but we still managed a few. We also managed our first hounds of the year. These were small examples and I think a few of these are around all year (I have had them as early as new years day) still with the mild weather it shouldn’t be too long before the first crab malt and the big female hounds start to show so bear that in mind for may/june time. We finished the day off with a nice mix of fish, not as many roker as last time but I think the majority have moved inshore now with the mild weather. we had 11 spurdogs, 4 smooth-hounds, 2 roker, lots of dogfish and a pouting. the lads put the effort in, fished hard and got results its always nice to see people catching a new species and many of the lads hadn’t caught a spurdog before today.
