january

Had the maldon sea anglers out the other day for their first trip of the year. We had debated wether to cancel or move the trip as there was plenty of wind forecast. The lads were still keen and as a few fish are about inshore we decided to head out. We started a bit later than usual as the wind had blown all the water away. It took a long time to flood too so I was glad I suggested a later start and we didn’t have far to travel to our first mark. The lads started with a few dabs and these were followed by whiting throughout the morning. There weren’t vast numbers but enough to keep us interested. The whiting were mostly pin whiting as the larger fish are up in the water feeding on the sprats at the moment. As the day went on we had a pouting and dave even had a 5 bearded rockling to add to our species. As the tide died we had a move and changed from small hooks and baits to tackle more suitable for roker. The afternoon produced some nice roker, the biggest falling to martin at over 10lbs. the lads had 10 roker and lost 2. We even snuck a dogfish out as well. As we steamed in the lads commented they were pleased we had made the effort to go out. I didn’t disagree as we had a nice comfortable day with several fish.
