Had our first trip of the new year today with several regulars and a couple of new faces. We cancelled yesterday and shuffled a few people around as today looked a better day. The weather was slightly better but not good enough to get offshore so we stayed inshore. We scratched around on a few marks and found a few roker. There were whiting there but mostly smaller ones as the bigger ones will be feeding on the sprats at the moment. The odd dogfish came out which is a sign of how mild it is. The roker and dogfish are feeding but they are finicky at the moment due to the vast abundance of food available to them and the water temperature making them a bit slower. We missed and lost a few roker due to this through out the day. Graham lost a very decent roker just shy of the net. He had left the bite for ages on my advice and if he hadn’t grabbed his rod when he did it may of gone in! he played the fish carefully back to the boat until it surfaced just behind the boat, rolled onto its back and opened its mouth. It wasn’t even hooked and had just been holding the bait! I would have put it at upper doubles but we will never know. We often get a run of decent roker in January/February which keeps us on our toes while the cod arnt feeding. Stephen and martin had a couple of nice dabs too. There is no shortage of them on the right tides. Dad had 79 on his boat with just a few anglers on board the other day. They keep us busy on a slow day and make a change from whiting. All of this fishing has been within the sheltered waters in and around the blackwater estuary which is great and saves you having to worry so much about cancelling trips.
