january 2019

With a bit of breeze forecast for later in the day I headed off puddle chucking today to start the year. After getting home in the early hours I was in no rush this morning so arrived fairly late. Once I was set up it wasn’t long before I got bored and caught a few roach and rudd from the margins to break my duck. I didn’t manage any pike on the dead baits from the first swim so I had a move a short distance to another swim. I wasn’t here long and I had a good bite. This turned out to be a lovely perch of 2lbs. shortly after this I had a pike around 6-7lbs too. My brother lee arrived soon after this and we moved to try another swim between us. We had nothing from the next swim and the wind was now picking up and causing us problems on float fished dead baits as they kept blowing back into the margins. We had another move so the wind was more behind us and I must admit despite the lack of fish it was lovely  in this corner of the lake. We could have easily mistaken it for late march rather than January the first! The lack of fish made us move again and the next swim did produce a lost pike for lee. As it got dark we had one last move to fish into darkness. I was lucky enough to catch another pike which was interesting in the twilight as I’d left my head torch in the car! We both had a nice day and it was a great way to start the new year.
