I took guided a trip on the Orkney with uncle Steve and Steve Canham today. we made our way out on another flat calm sunny day in the hope of finding a stingray. We started off with several schoolie bass in the morning. The first fish was a nice size but they shrunk as the morning went on. Bites dried up for a while but came back on as we considered a move. As the tide died we went looking for bass on lures but couldn’t find any showing despite conditions seeming perfect. We anchored again over slack and tried for a wrasse of two. Steve canham had one first drop and I had one a short while later. Uncle steve couldn’t hook any so with the start of the next tide we moved on to try for stingrays again. the schoolie bass were back on the feed again and I even managed a very chunky eel. Bites slowed up as the tide got going and the wind swung 180 degrees. Steve canham and myself were just sorting a potential tangle when uncle steve started making a fuss and saying he had hooked a stingray. I just assumed he was talking his usual drivel or had been in the sun too long but as I glanced around I saw his rod was well hooped over. Before we knew what was going on his line had snapped where he was thumbing the spool and he was left speechless while myself and steve canham consoled him by saying it was just and oyster shell and we didn’t believe him. All too soon it was home time and we had enjoyed a nice day despite the lack of the elusive stingray.
