There have been some fairly strong winds over the last week or two with just the odd lull in between. luckily we havnt had to disappoint anybody by cancelling their trip. As ever the fabulous shelter offered by the river blackwater and surrounding area have continued to provide some great sport for us. we have often been trying to catch the last of the better hounds as they move off with mixed results. When the hounds have eluded us we have been able to make the day up with some bass or rays, dogfish and whiting which are returning ahead of the autumn already.
As ever the School holidays has been a particularly busy time for family groups. We particularly enjoy seeing the youngsters out fishing with us. its nice to see them getting into angling and making memories for life. I often joke that they are also my next generation of customers too!
Mark and Pat booked the boat for a day out with each of their sons again. This was the lads first summer trip, although nobody had told the weather it was summer. The lads got off to a good start with a couple of nice hounds, some dogfish and lots of baby tope. Highlight of the day was watching the lads take it in turns to try and bring in a fish for over 40 minutes! After a lot of fuss it turned out to be another roker which wasn’t even that big but did join the lads for dinner!
Father and son duo Carl and Billy-roy also joined us on another unseasonable day. I was keen to show the lads some decent hounds while they were here. Our first mark didn’t produce but thankfully our second mark was more successful with some better hounds to get the reels screaming. Billy-roy normally catches far more than his Dad but this time Carl had bought his ‘A’ game so competition was close. Carl had a nice bass and there were several dogfish to keep us busy too. As the tide changed and we were enveloped in a swarm of tiny fruit flies we decided to have a move in search or some rays. We got away from the flies and had a few rays to end the day nicely.
I look forwards to seeing both groups later in the year when with any luck they will be kept busy with lots of dogfish and whiting between the rays.
We should see a few more hounds and bass over the coming weeks as well as sneaking some other trips in too. As the hounds and bass move off in September their place will be taken by the thorn-back rays as the move back inshore. If I cant get you out soon then please remember the bass will hang around offshore into November so please ask to get the best tides.
