Headed out on a premier offshore trip today with 6 regulars aboard. I must admit even I wasn’t sure if we would get off today. we set off a little later than I would have liked although still early just on the off chance it would be ok. Luckily the weather was ok and as we pushed further off we were pleased to see it was going to be average conditions for off here. We stopped on our first mark and set up for an onslaught of lesser spotted dogfish but thankfully they weren’t too thick on the ground. After Andy pulled out a couple of roker up to 14.4lbs we had our first spurdog come through. martin even managed one on each rod as a pack came through. there was a fair mix of fish from mid doubles down to a small pup for joe. The tide died and we had one or two more roker before it got going properly. We were still catching the odd spur but decided to put a move in before the tide got too much. This proved to be a good move as the rest of the afternoon was quite hectic. We had a nice run of roker coming aboard along with some madness every time a spurdog pack came through. there were a lot of double figure fish and to be honest we soon became blasé about ‘another double’ unless it looked to be a PB or boat record. There were a few small hounds coming in too as well as one coming off beside the boat. Stephen even managed to winkle out a nice bass of 4.8lbs (obviously returned) although he hadn’t had a roker yet. everybody had at least one double figure spurdog and before we stopped weighing them there were several around the 13-15lbs mark. Martin topped the scales with a fish of 17.5lbs before home time and im sure there were bigger fish down there. Just as I hauled the anchor Stephen had his roker, another double which was returned after the pic. Before today we hadn’t managed over 20- spurs in a day but we smashed it today with 47 spurs, 20 roker, 3 hounds and a bass along with lots of dogfish. The lads did well and all deserved it as every one of them knows exactly how rare a day like this is and fully appreciates it. Normally we would be please to see one or two spurs mixed in let alone this amount.
