We are just back from an exciting trip to the south coast for a couple of weeks with the Galloper. I look forwards to revealing more about this soon.  For now I will bring you up to date with some of our offshore trips back in Essex.

Over the last couple of months we have managed lots of offshore trips in between our popular general trips. I have already mentioned how good the bass fishing has been with steady numbers most trips and some extraordinary numbers on other trips. This has continued into November the last couple of years and looks promising for this year too. As well as the bass, we have had a couple of trips chasing flatties. Our first trip we went in search of plaice in less than ideal conditions. The lads still put full effort in and found some nice plaice along with tub gurnard, dogfish, weaver, whiting, scad, launce and jumbo mackerel. Special mention goes to Malcolm for showing us up catching the most bass on live baits.

The next day on a similar forecast I was a bit apprehensive about it accuracy after the previous trip but we headed out this time in search of turbot. First drift saw uncle Steve loose a turbot beside the boat. Obviously he was suitable chastised before the next drift! We missed some bites, lost a few and saw some big tub gurnard before Steve Hill got the first turbot of the day aboard. He was very pleased as this was his first ever. We decided to play on a near by wreck for a while which produced pouting, whiting, mackerel, scad and pollock before a couple more drifts for turbot. On the first drift back I managed on my self. Then the day was over all too quickly and we had to head in unfortunately.

With winter species in mind there are signs of hope for the coming months. I have heard of a few codling showing inshore and this was confirmed when Dad had not just one but two codling the other day! I doubt there will be any huge numbers any time soon but it would be nice to see a few again this winter. After last year it will just be nice if we are allowed to take you out all winter. Fingers crossed for that.

As the hounds and bass move off in September their place will be taken by the thorn-back rays as the move back inshore.  If I cant get you out soon then please remember the bass will hang around offshore into November so please ask to get the best tides.
