It has been another busy week aboard the Galloper. The wind is still stuck in the east which normally means one of two things. Either it’s flat calm or it’s rather snotty out there. We have seen some of each this week and occasionally a bit of both on the same trip! I think the cold wind and frosts on many mornings has held back the spring fishing a little however water temperatures are warming up again and we have seen a few hounds and bass mixed in so summer cant be far away.
It was great to welcome the Elliston family aboard once again for their first trip of the year. There may have been a brisk easterly wind with somewhat of a bite to it. however the boat sat comfortably head into this for much of the trip. Sheltered behind the wheelhouse we were in somewhat of a sun trap too. Bites were slow to materialise at first until Toni hooked the first decent fish. unfortunately it escaped before we knew what was happening. This signalled the start of the fish feeding and everybody started to catch. Between them the family had several dogfish, whiting, a dab and some rays. As ever there was great enthusiasm and excitement from the boys who are growing bigger with each year and now comfortably reel there fish in like pro’s. the girl’s won’t be left out though and caught their own rays including the biggest fish of the trip which fell to Toni (Mum). Unfortunately we will have to wait until next time to try and catch the one that got away though.
On other trips we have seen plenty of rays, dogfish and unseasonable amount of whiting at times. This could be due to the unseasonable weather we have seen lately! There are signs of summer in a few smooth-hounds and bass showing too and I’m sure these will increase in size and numbers over the next few weeks.
