2019 tope round up (so far)

I thought I would give you a break from the general reports this week and update you on how this years tope season panned out. everything happened early for us this year. I had a feeling it was heading that way so I hurriedly organised a tope trip at fairly short notice at the end of may. This turned out to be our best trip with several decent fish and several more lost. The biggest fell to uncle steve at 32lbs. we struggled with bait and weather after this (often related) and for the last few trips I have ordered in fresh mackerel to be delivered from billingsgate in the morning. Our first trip we boated 4 decent tope and lost 3 more. All of which came after a very worthwhile move for the afternoon.  The other trips produced just the odd decent fish and several smaller fish. one day when we couldn’t get any mackerel we drew a tope blank which was a shame although we did loose one. The best tides fell on weekdays and although we had a few trips booked the weather didn’t play ball. These are all part of offshore fishing, both the weather and the catches are hit and miss. The rewards are there though and I was pleased to see uncle steve beat his PB tope. He had a great day and pait me a fantastic compliment by saying he enjoyed catching them as much as the fishing we had in Shetland! Stephen Charles also had a PB after a lot of effort and a decent fish lost on his first trip. There were some great fish lost and it is worth remembering these fish will find any chink in your set up. Joe found this out to his cost when after a couple of screaming runs his fish emptied his spool to find he hadn’t bedded his braid on properly. It could take any more line and actually opened up a 10/0 circle hook before being lost.  Joe took it well though and im sure he will remember the fight for a while yet. im sure we will see a few more tope as the summer progresses if we get offshore again but most of the big girls come out early on in the season so we may have to wait until next year before we get some more PB tope  on board. I will put a post up when I have next years tides.
