There are signs of green shoots inshore at the moment although things are still slow going. I put a lot of it down to the large numbers of sprats that are hanging around. These should move off soon and as long as things remain mild then everything will kick off. We have still been finding one or two skate inshore and the numbers of dogfish are a promising sign of water temperatures being favourable. When things are slow it seems to give the dabs a chance to find our baits and so we have still caught one or two of them as well. One of the attractions of sea fishing in particular is that you never know what may eat the bait next. Barry proved this the other day when he had a cracking bite in just a few feet of water. The fish fought hard and was running up-tide so thoughts of bass or hound came to mind. You can imagine our surprise when a coalfish surfaced! It just goes to show you never know what will come out next and you certainly wont find out sitting on the sofa!
The sprats should be gone on the next set of tides with any luck and I am sure we are all hoping the commercial boats have left a few roker behind to kick off the spring fishing.
