Its been a funny old summer so far, the spring was held back with regular frosts in April and just a few brief hot spells so far. I personnel am hoping for an Indian summer, a nice calm spell mid September would suit me. Please place your orders with the weather gods on my behalf!  Fortunately the fish have played ball with great numbers of fish. there were plenty of Tope when we were running tope trips. Bass have made a good showing again with people heading home on most general trips with a bass or two for the table. The offshore bass trips are shaping up to be good once again and the bait fishing will only improve over the coming weeks as the start to make their way offshore and shoal up. The hound fishing has been steady too with most trips producing fish to double figures and some great sport. These fish will only hang around in numbers for a few more weeks before the majority disappear for the winter. The thorn-backs have been showing in some unseasonable numbers in some places throughout the whole of the summer. Although we have tried to save them for the days when we cant get to where we want of the other fish aren’t playing ball.

The other day I was joined by two Marks who’s other halves had hired the boat for them for the day. we started off looking for some bigger hounds and weren’t disappointed. The lads were kept busy as several packs of decent hounds moved through. each time rod tips were heaved over as the fish took their initial run. This was followed by the usual stop start fight as the fish first ran away from the boat the back towards us at full speed. At one point I had to lend a hand as three fish were hooked at the same time. These were all great fish around mid-double figures and of course released after a quick picture. Who could fail to enjoy this kind of fishing? the lads certainly had a good time and are currently planning their next trip for later in the year.

We should see plenty more hounds and bass over the coming weeks as well as sneaking some other trips in too. As the hounds and bass move off in September their place will be taken by the thorn-back rays as the move back inshore.  If I cant get you out soon then please remember the bass will hang around offshore into November so please ask to get the best tides.
