dolphins off of Essex

dolphins off of Essex

Although fishing is our main focus a trip on a boat is about more than fish. Being at sea can be a an exciting experience in its self. We see lots of wildlife on our trips too and I think it is an important part of angling. Some people enjoy seeing their first seal, others are pleased to see some elegant gannets feeding when we head offshore or a line of fulmars squabbling behind the boat. Were often see harbour porpoises on our trips. More often than not this is just a fleeting glimpse as I try to point out where they have surfaced.

We were lucky enough to be visited by a pod of dolphins on a recent trip. Any kind of whale or dolphin is a pleasure to see but it feels even more special knowing how rare this site is off of the Essex coast. I first spotted them off of our port side heading for us and knew they were too big to be porpoises straight away. We were then lucky enough to have a whole pod hang around off of our bows for several minutes. Stacey had joined us on this trip and managed to get some snaps on her phone for us.

She contacted some people university professors she knows that specialise in cetaceans and after some discussion and disbelief they decided we were lucky enough to see some white beaked dolphins. There were around 8-12 in the group, mostly adults with a couple of calf’s surfacing too. At first it was thought they may be white sides dolphins (equally as rare) but after studying the photos and questioning us they decided on white beaked dolphins. What a great experience, probably once in a lifetime and something to remember.

I cant promise you sighting like this on every trip but you never know your luck. If you fancy getting afloat then please get in touch.
